A childhood sheltered from risk and danger also tends to produce boring kids who grow up to be boring adults. Challenges shape us and build character. They make us, and life, much more interesting!

Risky play is so important, especially for boys! It’s so easy these days to allow kids to lead a sedentary and/or mostly adult-directed life, but it is so worth the extra effort it takes to send them outside, keep them active, and engage their minds AND bodies.

It’s important to allow kids to take risks so they can build confidence in their own skills. In fact, I think this is missing for a lot of kids today: they have very few opportunities to be tested, to navigate potentially dangerous situations, and they end up with almost zero framework for handling challenges.

👉🏻 Choosing slow food and intentional time working with my hands over mass produced convenience purchased at the store. (And trucked in from who knows where.)

Also, this turkey cobb salad is my new favorite. Such a treat and totally worth the time spent chopping all the ingredients!

Here’s what we typically include in our Cobb salads:
-base of salad greens
-smoked turkey
-bacon
-carrot
-sweet bell pepper
-tomato
-cucumber
-avocado
-hard boiled egg
-blue cheese or Gorgonzola crumbles
-homemade balsamic vinaigrette 🔥

Sometimes not every ingredient is available, and sometimes I add other things that we have on hand. Today we added chickpeas that I had soaked and cooked and needed to be finished up.

Everyone at my house prefers different dressings, too. Greg and I love the vinaigrette. Malachi likes balsamic vinegar. Creed uses hummus. And Haddon is a diehard ranch fan (we make it ourselves).

5 real food swaps to improve your family’s nutrition:

1. Instead of buying broth or canned soups, make your own soups from homemade bone broth. Bone broth is one of the BEST foods to incorporate into your diet!

2. Instead of drinking soda or juice, brew kombucha or drink herbal tea or electrolytes.

3. Instead of buying bread, make it yourself! I recommend sourdough, which is easier to digest and free from added yeast. Plus, it’s super tasty!

4. Instead of drinking milk from the grocery store, find a source for raw milk. Ditto for cheese!

5. Add a green salad to as many meals as possible. Provide toppings and homemade dressing options to entice reluctant family members.

We are losing generations of kids, saddling them with too much too soon, and it’s entirely preventable.

There is a better way. Keep them home! Allow them to learn at their own pace, free from the damaging effects of peer pressure, free from the pressure of keeping up or getting the right answer or wearing the right clothes or fitting in or “learning” so many things they will later forget and probably never even need to know.

Give them the gift of being themselves, having a childhood, and learning what is meaningful to them. You might be surprised at what a difference this makes in the trajectory of the life of a child!💕
