God fills in the gaps.

For several years I’ve asked God to bring someone into Malachi’s life to teach him to hunt. He’s such an avid outdoorsman and has wanted to hunt since he was big enough to hold a gun. Greg isn’t a hunter, and although we do have a few friends who hunt, nothing ever seemed to work out.

Last year, Malachi got his first deer, thanks to our neighbor and farm customer BD. This year (2025), he learned official gun safety from our friend CM and then God brought JK into his life to coach him in all things hunting.

Last weekend, they took over our new canning room to process venison. Malachi had processed his first deer completely on his own, with the help of a YouTube video. This time, he had a live coach (who even loaned him a meat grinder). What a generous gift of time and equipment!

It’s such a joy to see a desire in your child’s life met in a way you never could have planned. It might sound like a strange thing to be thankful for, but I’m so grateful for this answered prayer.🫶🏻

Now we need venison recipes! And tips! 🙏🏻

News flash: boys don’t have to play organized spor

News flash: boys don’t have to play organized sports in order to thrive.

If you love sports for your kids or they themselves *actually* love playing sports, cool. This post isn’t for you.

But if you’ve scratched your head at how all-consuming organized sports have become, if you’ve felt a pull to keep your kids at home and give them plenty of time to build relationships with each other (and with you), to develop hands-on skills, and just have MARGIN in their schedules, this post is for you. 🫶🏻

You need to know that it’s possible to raise boys who are “all boy” without surrendering your family to the hamster wheel of organized sports.

Boys (and girls) can learn team work, pursue fitness, and make friends WITHOUT SPORTS.

Do boys need purpose, challenge, lots of physical activity, and coaching? Absolutely! But sports are not the only avenue.

Might I suggest a farm? 😄 And in the absence of a farm, there are other ways. Get creative! Be resourceful! Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

You are allowed to opt out.
You’re allowed to make decisions for your family.
You’re allowed to parent your kids prayerfully and courageously.
You’re allowed to raise (cool, confident, capable, well-liked) boys, without sports. 🫶🏻
